This guide covers the option to type the written portion of the New Jersey bar exam on your own laptop: the exam software, the separate laptop-program registration (steps, windows, fees), minimum hardware requirements, and the default handwriting alternative. It does not cover the bar exam application itself, testing accommodations, or exam-day admission logistics, which are addressed in other files in this module.
The college version
Scope
This file covers the option to type the written portion of the New Jersey bar exam on your own laptop: the exam software, the separate laptop-program registration (steps, windows, fees), minimum hardware requirements, and the default handwriting alternative. It does not cover the bar exam application itself, testing accommodations, or exam-day admission logistics, which are addressed in other files in this module.
Legal Explanation
The exam and which part the laptop covers. New Jersey administers the Uniform Bar Examination and requires the NCBE-produced components — the MBE, MEE, and MPT (plus the MPRE, taken separately) [S4]. This structure is NCBE/national: the UBE is given on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of February and July, with the performance test (MPT) and essay (MEE) sessions on day one and the multiple-choice MBE on day two [S2]. The laptop option applies only to the essay portion of the exam — the MPT and MEE sessions [S1]. As a currency note, NCBE reports that New Jersey intends to administer the NextGen UBE beginning in July 2028, with February 2028 as the final administration of the legacy UBE, so the format described here has a known end date [S4].
The laptop program is NJ-specific and opt-in. The Board of Bar Examiners answers "Can I type the essay answers?" with: "A laptop program is available. Information will be on the website approximately 2 months prior to the exam" [S2]. Anyone who plans to take the essay portion on a laptop "MUST register for the Laptop Program" — registration is separate from, and in addition to, the bar exam application [S1].
The exam software. New Jersey's laptop program runs on ILG Exam360, administered through the state-specific portal at newjersey.ilgexam360.com [S3]. Registration on the portal involves: verifying that your laptop meets the minimum system requirements, logging in with the email address you used when registering with the Admission Office, following the portal's steps to register and download the software, and completing all required pre-exam steps — including taking a Trial Exam and uploading the Trial Exam answers — before exam day [S3]. Within the software, copy/paste is permitted when typing MPT and MEE responses [S2].
Registration windows and fees (NJ-specific; change-prone — reverify before relying). Per the Board's "Fees, Deadlines & More" page as checked on 2026-08-20: laptop registration and software download open approximately January 3 (10:00 a.m. ET) for the February exam and June 1 (10:00 a.m. ET) for the July exam; timely registration (Jan. 3–15 / June 1–15) costs $50, and the late/final window (Jan. 16–31 / June 16–30) costs $150 [S1]. The exact fee tiers conflict across the Board's own pages: a separate Board notice page shows a three-tier schedule of $0 timely (Jan. 2–15 / June 1–15), $75 first-late (Jan. 16–23 / June 16–23), and $150 final (Jan. 24–31 / June 24–30) [S5]. This draft prefers the dedicated fees page [S1] and the conflict is logged in _status/conflicts.md. Fees are non-refundable, and the Board's online credit-card processing is unavailable from 11:30 p.m. to midnight ET [S1].
Hardware requirements. The ILG Exam360 portal's minimum system requirements are: Windows 10 or higher (Windows S Mode is not supported) or macOS 13.0.0 or higher; 4096 MB of RAM; 500 MB of available hard-drive space; and the ability to connect to the internet, with a webcam required only where a jurisdiction uses remote testing [S3]. On exam day, laptop users should bring the laptop with its battery installed plus the power cord [S2].
The handwriting alternative. Handwriting is the default: applicants who have not registered for the Laptop Program write their essay responses in the answer books provided, which include scratch paper, and may also write in their test booklets for extra note space [S2]. Laptop registrants receive one sheet of scratch paper per essay session and may likewise write in their test booklets [S2]. Scratch paper is not permitted for the MBE, which is not part of the laptop program in any event [S2].
ELI-10: Explain It Like I'm 10
[HYPOTHETICAL — NOT A REAL CASE] Imagine your school's big end-of-year story-writing contest. Everyone gets a paper booklet to write in — that's automatic, no sign-up needed. But if you'd rather type your story on your own computer, the school has a special sign-up list: you have to add your name during a two-week window, pay a small fee, install the school's special typing app at home, and send in a practice story first so they know your computer works. Sign up late and the fee goes up; miss the window entirely and you're writing by hand, no exceptions. And the second day of the contest — the giant fill-in-the-bubble quiz — is bubbles for everybody, computer or not.
That is how New Jersey's laptop program works. Handwriting the essays is the default; typing them is an opt-in privilege that requires registering separately in a short window, paying a fee, installing the ILG Exam360 software, and uploading a Trial Exam before test day — and the multiple-choice MBE day is not typed by anyone [S1] [S2] [S3].
Real Case Reference (if applicable)
No published court decision squarely addresses laptop registration for the New Jersey bar exam, and this draft cites none. The governing authority is administrative rather than case law: the New Jersey Board of Bar Examiners, the agency that administers the exam, publishes the laptop-program requirements and deadlines on its official site [S1] [S2], and the program itself operates through the Board's vendor portal, ILG Exam360 [S3].
Key Takeaways
- The laptop option covers only the essay portion (MPT and MEE); it never covers the MBE day [S1] [S2].
- Laptop use requires a separate registration, distinct from the bar exam application, through the ILG Exam360 portal — including downloading the software and uploading a Trial Exam before exam day [S1] [S3].
- Registration opens roughly early January (February exam) and June 1 (July exam); per the Board's fees page, timely registration is $50 and late/final is $150, but a conflicting Board notice page shows $0/$75/$150 tiers, so confirm on njbarexams.org before paying [S1] [S5].
- Minimum specs: Windows 10+ (no S Mode) or macOS 13.0.0+, 4 GB RAM, 500 MB free disk space, internet access [S3].
- Handwriting is the default alternative — non-registrants write in the provided answer books, which include scratch paper [S2].
- The UBE format itself is national (NCBE), but the laptop program, its vendor, its deadlines, and its fees are New Jersey-specific — and NCBE reports NJ will move to the NextGen UBE in July 2028 [S2] [S4].
