Scope

This file covers the New Jersey bar exam application filing windows (timely, late, and final/extended-late), the fee attached to each window, laptop-registration fees and deadlines, payment mechanics, and the other application fees the NJ Board of Bar Examiners publishes on its fees-and-deadlines pages. It does not cover eligibility requirements, the character and fitness process, or fees paid directly to NCBE (such as MPRE registration).

Change-prone data notice (WRITING_GUIDE §2): Every fee and deadline below is inherently change-prone. All amounts and windows were verified directly against the official NJ Board of Bar Examiners pages on 2026-08-20 [S1][S2]. Re-verify against njbarexams.org before relying on any figure in a later cycle.

Governing authority (NJ-specific). New Jersey Court Rule 1:24-1 provides that two bar examinations are held annually at times and places the Board of Bar Examiners determines, subject to Supreme Court approval [S3]. The same rule requires applicants to file their materials by deadlines the Board establishes and to pay the required fees, which are set by the Board with the approval of the Supreme Court [S3]. So both the deadline structure and the fee tiers described below are creatures of New Jersey rule and Board policy — they are not set by NCBE, even though New Jersey administers NCBE's Uniform Bar Examination [S3][S4].

Filing windows and fee tiers (NJ-specific). The Board publishes a three-tier filing structure for each administration [S1][S2]. For the February exam: the timely window is October 1 – October 31 at a fee of $750; the first late window is November 1 – November 15 at $950; and the final (extended-late) window is November 16 – November 30 at $1,200 [S1][S2]. For the July exam: the timely window is March 1 – March 31 at $750; the first late window is April 1 – April 15 at $950; and the final window is April 16 – April 30 at $1,200 [S1][S2]. The Board lists no filing window after November 30 (February exam) or April 30 (July exam) [S1][S2]. Filing late therefore costs an additional $200 in the first late window and an additional $450 in the final window, relative to timely filing [S1][S2].

Payment mechanics (NJ-specific). The Board states that fees are non-refundable [S1][S2]. Critically, an application received without payment is treated as late — meaning a timely-submitted but unpaid application slides into the higher fee tier [S1][S2]. Payment must be made by credit card or by cashier's check or money order payable to "Secretary, Board of Bar Examiners"; personal checks and cash are not accepted [S1][S2]. Credit card transactions must post before 11:30 p.m. EST on the deadline day, and the Board states that credit card transactions will not be processed between 11:30 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. EST [S2].

Laptop registration (NJ-specific). Registering to type the exam on a laptop carries its own separate deadlines and fees: timely registration (January 3–15 for February; June 1–15 for July) costs $50, and late/final registration (January 16–31 for February; June 16–30 for July) costs $150 [S1][S2]. NCBE's guide notes only that New Jersey's laptop fee "varies," which is consistent with this two-tier structure [S4].

Other Board application fees (NJ-specific). The Board's fee schedule also lists: transfer of a UBE score into New Jersey, $675 [S1][S2]; admission on motion, $1,500 [S1][S4]; admission on motion for a qualifying military spouse or a law school professor, $675 [S1][S2]; in-house counsel (including foreign in-house counsel) limited licensure, $750 [S1][S2]; and foreign legal consultant, $750 [S2]. The Board additionally lists a November 30 (February) / April 30 (July) deadline for "NTA Applications" [S2]; this appears to refer to non-standard testing accommodations, but the acronym's expansion is not stated on the fetched page.

NJ vs. NCBE/national. The exam New Jersey administers is the national UBE (MBE, MEE, MPT), and the MPRE is an NCBE national requirement (minimum NJ score 75) [S4]. But the application deadlines, the late-fee tiers, and every dollar figure above are New Jersey-specific Board policy [S1][S3]. NCBE itself cautions that jurisdiction rules and policies change and directs candidates to the jurisdiction's own admission agency for current information [S4].

Source conflict noted. NCBE's Comprehensive Guide page for New Jersey (retrieved 2026-08-20) still lists the bar exam fee as $675 for all applicant categories, while the Board's own pages list $750 for timely filing [S1][S2][S4]. Per WRITING_GUIDE §7, the more official source — the Board's own website — is preferred here, and the conflict is logged in _status/conflicts.md.

ELI-10: Explain It Like I'm 10

[HYPOTHETICAL — NOT A REAL CASE] Imagine your school is running a big end-of-year trip, and permission slips are due by Friday. If you hand yours in by Friday, the trip costs $7.50. Forgot? You get one more week — but now it costs $9.50. Still forgot? There's one final week after that, and now it's $12.00. After that last week, the bus list is printed and nobody else can sign up, no matter how much they offer to pay. One more trick: if you hand in the slip on time but without the money, the school treats it as if you handed it in late — the paper alone doesn't count. And once you pay, you can't get the money back, even if you change your mind about the trip.

That is exactly how the New Jersey bar exam application works, with the numbers multiplied by 100: file on time and pay $750; miss it and the next two-week window costs $950; miss that and the final two-week window costs $1,200; after the final deadline there is no window at all. An application without payment counts as late, and fees are non-refundable [S1][S2].

Real Case Reference (if applicable)

No published decision squarely addresses New Jersey's bar exam late-filing deadlines or fee tiers. The governing authority is New Jersey Court Rule 1:24-1, under which the Board of Bar Examiners sets filing deadlines and fees subject to Supreme Court approval [S3], as implemented in the Board's published fee-and-deadline schedule [S1][S2].

Key Takeaways

  • New Jersey's deadline and fee structure is set by the Board of Bar Examiners with Supreme Court approval under Rule 1:24-1 — it is NJ-specific, not NCBE policy [S3][S4].
  • Three filing tiers per exam (verified 2026-08-20): timely $750 (Oct 1–31 for February; Mar 1–31 for July), first late $950 (Nov 1–15; Apr 1–15), final $1,200 (Nov 16–30; Apr 16–30); no window exists after the final deadline [S1][S2].
  • An application received without payment is treated as late, fees are non-refundable, and personal checks and cash are not accepted [S1][S2].
  • Laptop registration has its own tiers: $50 timely, $150 late/final [S1][S2].
  • Other Board fees include UBE score transfer $675, admission on motion $1,500 ($675 for qualifying military spouses and law professors), and in-house counsel $750 [S1][S2][S4].
  • NCBE's guide still lists a $675 exam fee, conflicting with the Board's $750; the Board's own page controls (conflict logged) [S1][S4].
